The Silk Road Cash and Payments Regional Conference organised by Currency Research was held in Almaty on 27-30 March 2023.

Silk Road Cash and Payments is an initiative aimed at introducing global experience, modern trends and developments in cash, non-cash payments, digitalization of financial services in Central Asia and neighboring regions.

The event brought together over 110 delegates from 40 countries, including Great Britain, France, Hungary, Austria, Germany, Finland, Georgia, Armenia, Tajikistan, Uzbekistan, Mongolia, Malaysia, Nigeria, Zambia.

During the event Akylzhan Baimagambetov held a bilateral meeting with the Deputy Director General of the Bank for International Settlements (BIS), Mr. Luiz Awazu Pereira da Silva. In the course of the meeting the parties discussed the expert interactions under the BIS Innovation Hub activities and other prospective areas of cooperation with BIS.

The event participants were also informed about the Digital Tenge project. Mr. Binur Zhalenov, Director General of Kazakhstan Center for Interbank Settlements, noted that the main focus of the centre’s operations in 2023 will be in using the Digital Tenge platform in real case scenarios. The plan is to work on areas with potential for both regulator and market, including social payments, the potential of technology in Decentralized Finance.
