National Bank Updated Registers of Payment Systems and Significant Providers of Payment Services

National Bank of Kazakhstan has updated a register of payment systems. The updated register is available on its official website.

18 payment systems have been registered in Kazakhstan thus ensuring continuous operation of the financial market. Among these, Interbank System of Money Transfer is a backbone payment system. Its operation is ensured by Kazakhstan Center of Interbank Settlements of the NBK. ISMT covers over 90% payments of participants of the currency market, security market, banking sector.

At the end of 2020, interbank clearing system was recognized as a significant payment system in the NBK register. This system services more than 63% of all the payments on the market, except for the ISMT.

Other significant payment systems include two international card payment systems, Visa and Masterсard.

Kazakhstan also has 7 systems of international money transfer, one of which is referred to significant payment systems.

Register of significant providers of payment services was also updated at the end of 2020. The list contains one provider of payment services in each of segments: ISMT payments, payments via direct correspondent accounts, on the market of payment cards. Two suppliers have become significant in the segment of electronic money.

Requirements to significant payment systems and significant providers of payment systems are formulated in the Payment and Payment System Law. The National Bank generates these registers based on analytical data about operation of payment systems and providers of payment services.
