External debt refers to the debt liabilities of residents to non-residents.

A key characteristic of external debt is the obligation of the debtor to repay the principal and/or interest.

External debt includes the debt obligations of both the public and private sectors to the rest of the world. Data on the external debt of the Republic of Kazakhstan cover the liabilities of all institutional sectors of the economy to non-residents, regardless of the currency in which the debt is denominated.
