Negotiations started on the National Bank of Kazakhstan joining the Bank for International Settlements

During the Spring meetings of the International Monetary Fund and the World Bank Group, the conference-call was held between the Governor of the National Bank of Kazakhstan, Erbolat Dossaev and the Bank for International Settlements (BIS) General Manager, Agustin Carstens.

The parties discussed the macroeconomic situation, economic development prospects for Kazakhstan, anti-crisis measures and economic reforms implementation, as well as bilateral cooperation issues, including the implementation of central bank digital currencies.

The National Bank of Kazakhstan has expressed its intention to initiate the process of becoming a member of BIS. The key role of this organization in the global financial landscape is to ensure monetary and financial stability, foster international cooperation and perform banking functions for central banks.

In case of successful negotiations, Kazakhstan will become the first representative of Central Asia to join the Bank for International Settlements. Membership would allow access to another international platform and an official forum on central banking for interaction between BIS members-central banks, as well as create additional opportunities for international financial transactions, settlements and the development of financial technologies.
