As of January 01, 2012 actual origination of the payment cards were mainly realized by 21 banks and JSC “Kazpost”. These institutes issue and distribute payment cards of the international systems (their share consists of 96.8%) like Visa International, Master Card, American Express International and China Union Pay. Beside Kazakhstani Banks issue payment cards of the local systems like Altyn Card – JSC “Halyk Bank of Kazakhstan”; Smart Alem Card – JSC “BTA Bank” and local card of Citybank Kazakhstan – JSC “Citybank Kazakhstan”.
As of January 01, 2012 Banks have issued 9.6mln payment cards and a number of card holders reached 8.9mln (comparing the situation with the same date of 2010, there is a growth of 14,0% and 13,3% respectively).
The most widespread ones are the debit cards with the share of 88,2%, the share of credit cards - 10,1%. The share of debit cards with credit limit and of prepaid cards is 1,6% and 0,1% respectively.
In December 2011 the volume of transactions with credit cards issued by the Kazakhstani originators was 505,4 bln.tenge (growth against December 2010 has totaled 36,3%). The number of transactions reached 16,9mln and increased by 18,7% versus December 2010. At that, the number of payments and amount of the cashless payments went up to 18,0% (3,2mln transactions) and 38,4% (61,1bln tenge), operations with cash withdrawals 18,9% (13,6mln transactions) and 36,0%(444,3bln tenge) respectively.
The main bulk of cashless payments has been made through POS-terminals (42,3% and 73,7% out of the total number of payments and volume of cashless payments) and ATMs (46,9% and 18,7% respectively). Transactions of cash withdrawals have been realized mainly through ATMs (97,9% and 88,9% out of the total number of payments and volume of cash withdrawal transactions).
