Press-release №15. National Bank Issues 30 YEARS SINCE THE CLOSURE OF SEMIPALATINSK NUCLEAR TEST SITE Collectors' Coins

The National Bank of Kazakhstan issues SEMEI IADROLYQ POLIGONYNYŃ JABYLǴANYNA 30 JYL collectors’ coins. These are silver coins of 500 KZT denomination and nickel silver coins of 100 KZT denomination.

The issue of coins is dedicated to the 30th anniversary from closure of Semipalatinsk Nuclear Test Site. Information about a coin sale date will be additionally posted on NBK website.

About 30 YEARS SINCE THE CLOSURE OF SEMIPALATINSK NUCLEAR TEST SITE collectors’ coins

Design concept of the coin illustrates history of nuclear tests. Stylized mushroom-shaped nuclear explosion consists of two parts. The left side embodies history of nuclear tests and is made in the form of fragments symbolizing lost lives and broken human destinies. The right part is made in the form of a stylized image of a dry tree as a symbol of the affected nature. Image of a green leaf in a dried tree crown is a sign of rebirth and hope.

Description of 30 YEARS SINCE THE CLOSURE OF SEMIPALATINSK NUCLEAR TEST SITE coins:

Collectors’ coins from 925/1000 purity silver are made using technology of applying colored enamel, weight - 31.1 g, diameter - 38.61 mm, quality - proof, face value - 500 KZT, mintage - 5,000 pieces.

Collectors’ coins from nickel silver, weight - 11.17 g, diameter - 31 mm, quality - uncirculated, face value - 100 KZT, mintage - 100,000 pieces.

The coins are intended for sale at a collectionvalue.

Obverse: in the central part on an ornamental background there are the state emblem of the Republic of Kazakhstan, along the circumference the inscriptions QAZAQSTAN RESPÝBLIKASY in the state language and REPUBLIC OF KAZAKHSTAN in English, in the upper part – logo of the National Bank of Kazakhstan. The bottom part contains information about denomination and weight of the coin as well as information about the metal and its purity.

Revese: stylized image of a nuclear explosion in the shape of a ‘mushroom’. Along the circumference there is inscription SEMEI IADROLYQ POLIGONYNYŃ JABYLǴANYNA, in the upper part inscription SINCE THE CLOSURE OF SEMIPALATINSK NUCLEAR TEST SITE, in the center of the coins there are inscriptions 30 JYL/YEARS and ‘1991-2021’ indicating the anniversary date of the event.

Silver coins are issued in souvenir packaging and are supplied with a numbered quality certificate of the National Bank of the Republic of Kazakhstan in the state, Russian and English languages.

Collectors’ coins of 500 and 100 tenge are accepted at their face value throughout the Republic of Kazakhstan for all types of payments as well as for crediting to bank accounts and for transfer, they must be changed and exchanged without restriction in all the banks of the Republic of Kazakhstan.

Collectors’ coins were made at the Kazakhstan Mint.
