Inflation trends in Kazakhstan’s regions in May 2022

In May 2022, annual inflation in the country accelerated and made 14.0% (compared to 13.2% in April). In terms of regions, annual inflation sped up in 15 regions and decelerated in 2 regions.

The highest acceleration was recorded in Mangystau Region (from 13.9% in April to 15.2% in May), Karaganda Region (from 13.5% to 14.8%) and West Kazakhstan Region (from 12.2% to 13.5%).

Growth pace of foodstuff prices in May rose to 19.0% year-on-year (17.9% in April). The maximum increase in prices for goods of this group was recorded in Mangystau Region (21.0%).

The growth rate of prices for non-food products also grew to 11.9% year-on-year (11.1% in April). The maximum value was reported in the Nur-Sultan (14.3%), and minimum in Shymkent (10.2%).

Prices for paid services in May increased by 9.1% (8.9% in April), meanwhile prices rose significantly above the national level in East Kazakhstan Region (11.4%), significantly lower – in Zhambyl Region (6.3%).

Monthly inflation in the country was 1.4% in May 2022, which is higher than the average value of May inflation for the past 5 years (0.5% for 2017–2021).

Prices in May 2022 increased in all 17 regions above their average historical rate. The highest acceleration of the monthly inflation was indicated in Mangistau Region (2.2%).
