On the issuance of the 10,000 Tenge Banknote from the new “Saka Style” series

The National Bank of Kazakhstan (hereinafter referred to as the NBK) will release the banknotes with a face value of 10,000 tenge of the new design of 2024 into circulation starting June 28, 2024.

This is the second banknote in the new “Saka Style” series. It is based on elements of “Saka style”, which is considered the ancestor of traditional Kazakh ornament and reflects country’s heritage from the unique culture of nomads to modern Kazakhstan.

These banknotes are expected to enter mass circulation in September 2024, as the delivery to all regions of the country and the adaptation of equipment (ATMs, terminals, and other cash register devices) require additional time.

About the design and shape of the banknote

The obverse side features:

- a branch of the “Tree of Life” with a soaring bird (Issyk Kurgan, 5th – 4th centuries BCE, a detail of the Golden Man’s headdress, symbolizing the sacred connection between nature and beliefs),

- a DNA spiral and an infinity symbol stylized as an ornament, representing the connection between humans and nature,

- an artifact – an ornament in the form of a leopard figure on a mountain peak (Issyk Kurgan, 5th – 4th centuries BCE, a detail of the Golden Man’s headdress, with the snow leopard symbolizing fearlessness, power, and beauty).

The reverse side features a leopard against the background of a stylized ornamental shield. Behind the main image is a circular Kazakh ornament symbolizing the following ideas:

  • The “Shield” symbolizes the protection of values,
  • The ancient symbol represents the four cardinal directions,
  • The solar sign in the center symbolizes creative energy and life.

Additionally, the reverse side of the banknote features an artifact: the head of a leopard with griffins in its jaws (Berel Kurgans, “Valley of the Kings”, 8th – 7th centuries BCE, East Kazakhstan Region, an ornamental element symbolizing determination and strength). In the center of the banknote, as a background, is the outline of the Kazakh “infinity” ornament depicting the landscape view of the Zailiysky Alatau mountains within.

Regarding the procedure for the replacement and establishment of the period of parallel circulation of banknotes

The new 10,000 tenge banknotes will enter into circulation on June 28, 2024, and will replace the 10,000 tenge banknotes of the 2012 series (hereinafter referred to as the old series banknotes) over a period of two years.

Therefore, all old series banknotes will be gradually withdrawn from circulation over this two-year term. Accordingly, during this term of parallel circulation, the public will not need to exchange old series banknotes for new ones at second-tier banks or the branches of the NBK. The term of parallel circulation for both the old and new series banknotes will be from June 28, 2024 to June 28, 2026.

After the term of parallel circulation ends on June 28, 2026, all banks and Kazpost will exchange old series banknotes for new series ones for a period of three years, until June 28, 2029. It is important to note that NBK branches will accept the old series banknotes for an unlimited period of time.

Both the new series banknotes (2024) and the old series banknotes (2012) will be legal tender during their term of parallel circulation and must be accepted at their nominal value throughout the Republic of Kazakhstan for all types of payments and transfers, and for depositing to bank accounts.

These banknotes will be exchanged without restriction at all NBK branches, Kazpost, second-tier banks, and branches of non-resident banks in Kazakhstan.

As a reminder, a refuse to accept banknotes and coins that are legal tender is an administrative offense under the Code of the Republic of Kazakhstan On Administrative Infractions.
