As of May 1, 2009, 19 second-tier banks and JSC «Kazpost» realise issue of payment cards. Second-tier banks issue payment cards of local systems: Altyn card – by JSC «Halyk Bank of Kazakhstan» and JSC «ATF Bank»; SmartAlemCard – by JSC «ВТА Bank»; TemirCard – by SO JSC «ВТА Bank» JSC «Теmirbаnк», JSC «Citybank Kazakhstan» and JSC «Tsesnabank». Also commercial banks of Kazakhstan issue and distribute payment cards of international systems: VISA International, Europay International, American Express International, China Union Pay and Diners Club International.
As of May 1, 2009, the number of cards, issued by banks of Kazakhstan, was 7.0 million, the number of card holders was 6.6 million (growth - by 13.9% and 14.6% respectively, in comparison with the same period of the last year)[1]. As the most widespread cards, the cards of international payment systems have the share of 97.6% and the local cards – 2.4% respectively. As of May 1, 2008 this ratio was 96.5% and 3.5% correspondingly.
In April 2009 the value of transactions using payment cards issued by banks of Kazakhstan was KZT 203.9 billion (12.9% growth in comparison with the same period of the previous year). In April 2009 volume of transactions was 9.5 million transactions (growth - by 13.1% in comparison with the same period of the last year).
Growth of the volume and value of non-cash payments has made 12.0 % (1.6 million transactions) and 4.0 % (20.6 billion tenge), and of the volume and value of operations on cash withdrawal - 13.3 % (7.9 million transactions) and 13.9 % (183.4 billion tenge) accordingly.
